Profile: What Makes Pusser’s Coronation Reserve 2023 Special
The coronation bottling from Pusser’s Rum was released on the occasion of the coronation of Charles III on 6 May 2023. Rums from Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago were selected for this bottling, matured for at least three years in charred ex-bourbon casks and distilled from molasses in pot stills and column stills. Only around 12,000 bottles came onto the market worldwide.
The recipe resembles the last rum ration of the British Navy, served on 31 July 1970. That day went down in history as Black Tot Day. Since 1655 Royal Navy sailors had received their daily “tot” of rum, at first as a substitute for beer – one of the longest unbroken traditions at sea. On 31 July 1970 at 11 am, six bells in the forenoon watch, the cry of “Up Spirits” was heard for the last time, and on every Royal Navy ship glasses were raised one last time.
In September 1979 Pusser’s founder Charles Tobias, MBE, obtained permission from the Admiralty to commercialise the recipe. To this day Pusser’s Rum is produced under licence to the Admiralty recipe. A toast to the new king is therefore fitting with this rum.
Tasting Notes: What Pusser’s Coronation Reserve 2023 Tastes Like
- Nose: Fine, fruity notes of tropical fruit, plus spicy oak and some vanilla; the scent of wood and barrel lingers on the nose
- Palate: Full and round on the palate – the fruit again, plus soft caramel, exotic spices and sweet dried fruit; also molasses, raisin bread, nutmeg, dark oak, ripe bananas, cherries and cola
- Finish: Long, fruity-spicy, with creamy vanilla and oak
