Portrait: What makes the Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa special

When a rum is named after a warship, you can be sure: This wasn't just a random choice made at a beach bar, but a piece of history. Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa is part of a rum range that packs more of a cannon blast than a cocktail umbrella – and that's precisely what makes it so charming. Responsible for this maritime theme are St. Lucia Distillers, one of the most renowned distilleries in the Caribbean.
On the small island of St. Lucia, rum has been produced with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship for decades – including the well-known Chairman's Reserve brand. Admiral Rodney is, so to speak, the historically ambitious cousin: a bit more solemn, a bit prouder, looking back on great naval battles rather than sunsets. The series is named after Admiral George Rodney, who won the decisive victory over the French fleet at the legendary Battle of Les Saintes in 1782.
A turning point in history that secured Great Britain's dominance in the Caribbean. One could say: no small feat – and definitely a reason to raise a glass of rum later. The individual bottlings bear the names of the ships that particularly distinguished themselves in this battle. HMS Princessa was one of them.
Together with HMS Royal Oak and the flagship HMS Formidable, she broke the line of the French fleet – a tactical maneuver that still lives on in history books and presumably in sailors' yarns. (HMS, by the way, stands for His or Her Majesty’s Ship - depending on the reigning monarch's mood.)

Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa is produced entirely by St. Lucia Distillers. The rums used come from the column still and have matured for several years in ex-Bourbon Casks.
The result is a rum with a clear structure and classic origin – completely unpretentious, but with plenty of tradition.

In short: Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa is less pirate and more admiral. One with history, a uniform, and the confident knowledge of having been on the right ship at the right time.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, a fine, elegant scent of honey-sweet raisins unfolds. This is accompanied by smooth vanilla and a subtle hint of tobacco, which lends depth and warmth to the aroma.
  • Palate: On the palate, the rum is pleasantly sweet and balanced. Notes of brown sugar and crème brûlée take center stage, before drier nuances of toasted oak join in, providing structure.
  • Finish: The finish is complex and lingering. An elegantly spicy oak note forms the backbone, complemented by caramel and fine tropical spices that resonate long afterward, harmoniously rounding off the overall impression.
