Profile: What Makes BrewDog 500 Cuts Hand Made Spiced Rum Special
BrewDog is known as a craft brewery from Ellon in Aberdeenshire – but the Scots also distil: the spirits division started in 2016, at first under the name Lone Wolf, later as BrewDog Distilling. The range includes the rum brand 500 Cuts, to which the Hand Made Spiced Rum belongs.
The base is a white rum made from sugar cane molasses, fermented for several days with red wine and rum yeast and then twice distilled in copper pot stills. Only then is the rum flavoured with natural botanicals to make a spiced rum: tonka bean, clove, lavender, cardamom, orange peel, mace, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, plus some unrefined muscovado sugar for subtle sweetness.
The result is a full, spicy rum that puts the spices centre stage: cinnamon and clove define the picture, joined by orange and a soft vanilla-caramel note.
