Elements of Islay Cask Edit

Profile: The Elements of Islay Cask Edit at a glance

  • Elements of Islay Cask Edit - The science of whiskymaking, remixed
  • Smoky, fruity, balanced - like a well-composed experiment
  • Blended malt with character - not off the shelf, but from the connoisseur
  • 46% vol. - strong, but not overwhelming

Portrait: What makes the Elements of Islay Cask Edit special

Welcome to the laboratory of pleasures, where test tubes have been swapped for tumblers and the lab coat wearer is not Professor Proton, but a Master Blender. Elements of Islay Cask Edit sounds like a chemistry experiment – and feels a bit like one, too. Except that instead of a "boom!" and a puff of smoke, a comforting "mmm!" follows.

Behind the name lies not a top-secret distillery, but a playful yet honest blended malt from Elixir Distillers. These London whisky nerds have made it their mission to celebrate Islay in all its smoky, peaty facets – in series that sound like they've been stolen from the periodic table. No wonder, then, that the bottles look more like a pharmacy than a liquor store. Science meets whisky - and the results are surprisingly drinkable.

The Cask Edit is, in a sense, the "Best of Islay," where robust south coast smoke (we're looking at you, Laphroaig!) and the somewhat fruitier north (perhaps Bunnahabhain?) blend into a harmonious ensemble - without sounding like a poorly coordinated mixtape.

Incidentally, this whisky is also part of an expanding Scotch galaxy: On board is not only organic Highlander single malt, but also the pioneering material from the Isle of Raasay - the first legally distilled whisky from this mini-island. So basically: three regions, one vision, one cask edit.

And as if all that wasn't nerdy and appealing enough: the price is now even lower. This not only pleases your palate, but also your wallet.

Cheers, or as they say on Islay: Slàinte, baby!

Tasting Notes: This is how the Elements of Islay Cask Edit tastes like

  • Nose: freshly brewed coffee with hot milk, roasted almonds with white chocolate pralines behind it - all over with light peat smoke and a basket of fresh fruit
  • Palate: sweet with mineral notes - vanilla and spicy wood, with notes of freshly baked croissants with butter, slightly fruity and again the coffee
  • Finish: slightly smoky and sweet on the finish - again the fresh fruit basket
