Profile: What Makes Tomatin 16 Year Old Moscatel Wine Casks Special
The Tomatin distillery was founded in 1897 as Tomatin Spey Distillery Co Ltd next to the village of the same name south of Inverness and worked with only two stills until 1958. It then grew strongly: in the 1970s it was the largest distillery in Scotland with an annual output of 12.5 million litres. In 1986 it went into liquidation and was rescued by its Japanese bulk customers Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co – Tomatin thus became the first Scottish distillery under Japanese control. Today it operates six wash stills and six spirit stills and is majority-owned by Takara Shuzo.
This elegant single malt whisky from the Scottish Highland distillery is bottled for the travel retail market. Tomatin 16 Year Old Moscatel Wine Casks received a second maturation in former Moscatel wine casks after long ageing, which lends it intense notes of sun-dried fruit. The traditional oak keeps the whisky balanced.
