Portrait: What makes the Aberlour 14 year old Double Cask Matured so special

Let's imagine you're standing in a Scottish valley, the Scottish Speyside gently embracing you (or harshly, depending on the weather), and from a small, charming town called Aberlour comes a whisky that has been maturing for a proud 14 years since 2020 - and has considerably more life experience than many a teenager.

The Aberlour 14 year old Double Cask Matured is something of a gentleman among Speyside whiskies. Not in a suit, but more in a kilt, but with style. It's been officially released on the market since winter 2020 and has since made many a whisky lover's heart beat faster – presumably because it knows how to behave. After all, it was raised in two casks: one in American oak and one in sherry casks. A kind of upbringing according to the motto: "A little sweet, a little stern – but always with character."

The Aberlour distillery itself, by the way, is no hip newcomer to the whisky playground. It was founded in 1879 by a gentleman named James Fleming, who modestly said: "Let the Deed Show" - which means: "Words are silver, whisky is gold." Or something like that.

The distillery is located directly on the Spey River, in the heart of the famous Speyside region, where you'll find more whisky distilleries than sheep - well, almost. And as befits a true Scotsman, tradition is not only taken seriously there, but also stored, filtered, and lovingly bottled.

In short: The Aberlour 14 year old isn't a loud boast, but a whisky that knows where it comes from - and is quite rightly a touch proud of it. Slàinte!

An elegant and balanced single malt, which offers a successful combination of sweetness, fruitiness and spice thanks to its double cask maturation. Well suited for connoisseurs seeking a smooth yet complex Speyside whisky.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Aberlour 14 year old Double Cask Matured tastes like.

  • Nose: The aroma is very harmonious and balanced - sweet vanilla and delicate honey form the foundation, complemented by the fruity aromas of ripe cherries. A subtle hint of milk chocolate pleasantly rounds off the aroma profile and lends the whisky a soft, inviting depth
  • Palate: On the palate, the Aberlour 14 year old is round and mild - the sweet aromas continue with distinct notes of caramel and dark berries. As the palate progresses, delicately spicy accents of ginger emerge, giving the taste additional structure. A hint of apple crumble creates a warm, slightly fruity, crumbly impression that rounds out the profile
  • Finish: The finish is long-lasting, sweet, and well-balanced - the notes remain present without being dominant, and sound pleasantly soft

In der Nase frisch und süß, die Süße bleibt im Mund erhalten und klingt mit Sherry-Noten sehr schön aus. Empfehlenswert!
