Portrait: What makes the Glenlivet Triple Cask Matured Distiller's Reserve special
What happens when you put a Scottish single malt in not one, not two, but three different casks? It's simple: You get the Glenlivet Triple Cask Distiller's Reserve - or as it might be called in Scotland: "Triple Cask Magic for Advanced Users".
The Glenlivet distillery was founded in 1824, just when illegal distilling was no longer illegal in the Highlands - very convenient for George Smith, the founder. The man was so confident in his whisky that he had himself equipped with a pistol for safety. Today, weapons are no longer needed – Glenlivet defends its place in the whisky world peacefully, with style and tradition.
The Distiller's Reserve is a true frequent traveler among whiskies: It was first allowed to mature in American oak casks, then in former sherry casks, and finally in specially selected casks that also wanted to have their say. Triple-matured – sounds like a very experienced tipple.
And although Glenlivet is now an integral part of the whisky world, the brand has never lost its spirit of discovery. So if you're looking for a whisky that combines tradition, experimentation, and a bit of Scottish pragmatism - here you go!
A dram for the curious, collectors - and all those who believe that you can never have enough casks.
Slàinte!
