Portrait: What makes the Dzama Cuvée Noire special
If the word "rum" brings to mind pirates, peg legs, and treasure maps, prepare to set sail a little further. With Dzama Cuvée Noire, the journey takes you to Madagascar—specifically to the island of Nosy Be, off the country’s northwest coast. Here, amidst tropical vegetation and the Indian Ocean, lies the home of a rum brand that proves exceptional spirits don’t necessarily have to come from the Caribbean.
The story of Dzama begins around 1980 with Lucien Fohine and his wife. Fohine ran a business centered on Scotch whisky and came up with an idea that would likely be considered a textbook example of creative repurposing today: Why not use the empty whisky casks to age rum? What began as a pragmatic consideration evolved into a distinct rum tradition. Sometimes, you don’t need a sudden stroke of genius—just a few empty barrels and someone with the vision to see their potential.
The name "Dzama" refers to Dzamandzar, the brand’s original home on the island of Nosy Be. Today, production takes place under the umbrella of the company Vidzar, which continues the brand’s legacy. Since 1996, Lucien’s son, Franck Fohine, has been the driving force behind its further development. What started as a local concept has grown into a brand that marries its Malagasy origins with an international outlook.
And then there is the Cuvée Noire—a name that sounds as if it keeps a tuxedo in the closet and an invitation to a secret dinner party in its pocket.
You don’t need to own a tuxedo or be a member of an exclusive club to explore it. A touch of wanderlust, a bit of curiosity, and a free evening are all it takes.
Dzama Cuvée Noire represents a rum tradition that has forged its own path, far removed from the usual clichés. It brings a piece of Madagascar into your glass—and, at least in your imagination, a bit of a vacation to your own patio.
In short: If you want to tell a story that goes beyond the typical associations of palm trees and pirates the moment the word "rum" is mentioned, Dzama makes for an intriguing conversation starter. "Arrr" is a thing of the past—today, it’s all about Madagascar.
