Portrait: What makes the Isle of HARRIS Gin special
Isle of Harris Gin is more than just a drink - it's liquid island wanderlust in one of perhaps Scotland's most beautiful bottles. It has been distilled since 2015 on the island of Harris, a windswept beauty in the Outer Hebrides, where more sheep than people live and the Atlantic Ocean makes a daily splash.
Here, where the air smells of salt, stories, and the occasional wet wool sweater, stands the Isle of Harris Distillery. It's small, welcoming, and a kind of community center with a copper kettle: They produce not only gin and whisky, but also pride, solidarity, and a bit of magic. The approximately 2,000 islanders embrace the weather with serenity and guests with friendliness – and, incidentally, one of the most charming gins ever is bottled and labeled by hand there.
The mysterious ingredient? Sugar kelp – a brown algae that isn't harvested by machine, but lovingly retrieved from the sea by a real diver. (Yes, a diver. Sounds like a Bond movie, but it's a real craft.)
Whether as a gift, a quick sip, or as a stylish companion through the tides of everyday life, the Isle of Harris Gin brings maritime flair to the glass. And if anyone asks why you're fondling a bottle of gin: It's the glass. Or wanderlust. Probably both.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Isle of HARRIS Gin tastes like
- Nose: Fresh and clear, with a maritime breeze in the foreground - fine juniper aromas meet citrus zest, especially orange and grapefruit - a subtle herbal spice and a hint of sea air immediately hint at the Atlantic origins - very clean and elegant on the nose
- Palate: Soft and balanced, with a delicate sweetness and refreshing citrus notes - juniper remains present, but never overpowering - the sugar kelp brings a subtle salty minerality into play, which makes the gin exceptional - accompanied by the whole is rounded off by spicy nuances such as pepper, coriander, and a hint of cinnamon
- Finish: Medium-length and harmonious - the citrus notes fade slowly, while a gentle herbal freshness and a hint of maritime saltiness linger on the tongue - clear, fresh, and with a clean finish that makes you want the next sip
