Portrait: What makes the A.H. Riise Pharmacy 1838 Licorice Shot special

If licorice were an adventure, then the A.H. Riise Pharmacy 1838 Licorice Shot would be the expedition leader. The very name suggests that nothing is done half-heartedly here: "Pharmacy 1838" evokes images of carefully measured recipes, antique apothecary cabinets, and a touch of secret formulas from a time when pharmacists combined the art of healing with a bit of witchcraft.
And indeed: behind this liqueur lies the A.H. Riise tradition, which stands for high-quality spirits with a history. The journey begins in the 19th century with Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish pharmacist who liked to sweeten the classic everyday pharmacy routine with a touch of Caribbean flair. On the island of Saint Thomas, Riise opened his pharmacy and, in addition to medicinal tinctures, began developing spirits – a step that would later bring him worldwide fame.
Who would have thought that a pharmacist who actually mixed drops for all sorts of ailments would one day delight the world with rum and liqueurs? The Pharmacy 1838 Licorice Shot is an almost black, mysterious vodka-based liqueur that puts licorice front and center. And when you look at it, you might almost think you're peering into a small black hole filled with Caribbean history, Danish precision, and pharmacy know-how.
The name "Shot" already suggests that this is not a quiet stroll - rather a small, intense adventure trip that can unfold in just one moment. As with all A.H. Riise products, this one also contains a lot of history: apothecary spirit, colonial history, and a touch of Caribbean lifestyle come together.
And although licorice sets the tone, the liqueur reminds us that Riise doesn't just bottle any old spirit – here, history is being drunk, if you will, with a wink and a healthy dose of humor.

In short: Whoever looks at this bottle holds in their hand a mixture of apothecary ingenuity, Caribbean temperament, and a generous helping of licorice. A shot that stimulates not only the throat but also the imagination.

Tasting Notes: This is how the A.H. Riise Pharmacy 1838 Licorice Shot tastes like

  • Nose: The nose begins unusually with slightly metallic aromas reminiscent of rusty nails. Soon, classic English licorice elements emerge, accompanied by a subtle, spicy complexity that elegantly rounds off the first impression.
  • Palate: On the palate, the liqueur is rich and full-bodied. Licorice and salmiak are clearly present, yet in perfect balance, so that the intense aromas never overwhelm but rather interact harmoniously.
  • Finish: The finish is long and balanced. Sweetness and spice linger together, while fine licorice notes and a hint of oak add further depth to the finish.
