Portrait: What makes the Benromach 15 year old special
There are whiskies that roar. And there are some that whisper. The Benromach 15 year old does both - but only if you ask nicely.
This fine wine was born in the Scottish town of Forres, in Speyside – where cows are happier, mists more mystical, and Casks more precious. The Benromach Distillery isn't one of those modern, glossy factories with touchscreens and laser shows. No, here the work is still done by hand - and with heart, sweat, and a little bit of Highland magic.
Benromach was founded in 1898 - a year when Queen Victoria was still alive, the word "internet" still sounded suspiciously like witchcraft, and whisky... well, whisky was pretty good even back then. Like many honest things in life, Benromach took a bit of a break (okay, a few decades) before the Urquhart family - independent bottlers and whisky whisperers at Gordon & MacPhail - revived the distillery in 1993 and reopened it after five years in 1998.
Since then, everything here has been kept small - not the whisky, but the production method: just two stills, a lot of manual labor, and no room for mass production or hocus-pocus.
The Benromach 15 year old is therefore not a big-mouthed blender, but rather the quiet hero in the background. The kind that has good stories to tell if you listen – preferably after sunset, with a comfortable armchair and no rush in your heart. Slàinte!
Tasting Notes: This is how the Benromach 15 year old tastes like
- Nose: Complex and inviting: A mix of dried fruits, sherry sweetness, and a subtle spice. Aromas of raisins, orange peel, and dark chocolate meet a hint of oak and subtle smoke. Light hints of cloves and a touch of leather appear in the background.
- Palate: Full-bodied and balanced with a distinct sherry character. Juicy dried fruits, toffee, and a hint of cinnamon blend with roasted nuts and fine oak spice. A subtle smoke resonates, never intrusive, but present – like a gentleman in a tweed suit who doesn't push himself into the foreground, but fills the room.
- Finish: Long, warming, and harmonious. The smoke becomes a little more pronounced without overpowering the fruity and spicy impression. A pleasant hint of dark chocolate and oak bitterness lingers, inviting the next sip.
