Profile: What Makes Bushmills Steamship Coll. #2 Port Cask Reserve Special
The Steamship Collection celebrates the 125th anniversary of the great voyage of the steamship “SS Bushmills”, which in September 1890 carried the first shipment of Irish whiskey from the Bushmills distillery to America. After the Sherry Cask Reserve, which opened the series in 2016, the Port Cask Reserve is the second bottling; each puts a different cask type in the spotlight, and the series was originally released for travel retail.
The Port Cask Reserve contains whiskeys matured in ex-ruby port casks (pipes) of the kind used in the Douro Valley in Portugal for port wine. They give the triple-distilled single malt its fruitiness and chocolatey depth.
Bushmills sits on the coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland on the River Bush and is regarded as the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world: in 1608 King James I granted the licence to distil; in 1784 Hugh Anderson founded the present distillery.
Tasting Notes: What Bushmills Steamship Coll. #2 Port Cask Reserve Tastes Like
- Nose: Elegant, pronounced aromas of ripe plums and almonds, with honey on ripe plums and plenty of barley notes; behind them roasted coffee beans, black cherry and exotic spices
- Palate: Mild and soft – the damson plums again, plus fresh black coffee and mild honey; juicy notes of cherry, plum, peach and strawberry with a hint of peppery spice, plus malt and vanilla
- Finish: Long and soft, the almonds and honey are present; a touch of leather and dark chocolate linger
