Portrait: What makes the Bunnahabhain An Cladach special

When people think of Islay, images of smoking peat fires, wild coastlines, and hardy Scots often spring immediately to mind. And right in the midst of it all stands the historic Bunnahabhain distillery. Since 1881, it has braved the wind, the weather - and likely the occasional grumpy seagull, too. Situated at the very northern tip of this famous whisky island, the distillery looks out directly over the sea—which explains why, presumably, the first thing one learns there is how to handle a rain jacket, and only *after* that, how to distill whisky.

With the single malt "An Cladach" - Gaelic for "the Coast" - Bunnahabhain pays tribute to precisely this maritime heritage.

This bottling was developed specifically for the Travel Retail market - that is, for people who originally just wanted to make a quick dash to their gate, only to suddenly find themselves strolling out of the duty-free shop with a bottle of whisky tucked under their arm. A classic case of "I was just looking."

The name, incidentally, suits the distillery perfectly. The coastline surrounding Bunnahabhain is rugged, awe-inspiring, and so quintessentially Scottish that the mere sight of it makes you almost instinctively want to pull on a wool sweater. Even in days gone by, the distillery’s location made for a bit of an adventure: for a long time, it was accessible primarily by boat. Roads? A nice thought, perhaps, but certainly not a priority. The sea was the direct route to the wider world - and, of course, the way back home.

Today, Bunnahabhain has long since established itself as one of the most renowned names on Islay, enjoying an outstanding reputation worldwide. Yet, the distillery has managed to preserve its distinctive character: deeply rooted in tradition, authentic, and refreshingly unpretentious. It offers no loud spectacle; rather, it is the kind of whisky brand that stands calmly by the harbor, knowing full well that it needs no grand performance to make its presence felt.

"An Cladach" embodies that sense of the coast, wanderlust, and Scottish whisky history—making it perfect for anyone who loves to take a little piece of Islay home with them after their travels.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Bunnahabhain An Cladach tastes like

  • Nose: Intense sherry aromas define the initial impression, accompanied by luscious dried fruits. These are joined by soft caramel and delicate vanilla notes, lending the bouquet a warm and inviting depth.
  • Palate: On the palate, the whisky presents itself as soft and creamy, with a distinct sherry influence. Nutty accents and spicy notes provide additional character, while a fresh sea breeze lingers in the background, serving as a reminder of the distillery's coastal location.
  • Finish: The long and satisfying finish is carried by intense notes of luscious dried fruits, fading out in a pleasantly warm and harmonious manner.
