Profile: What Makes The Pogues Official Irish Whiskey Special
In collaboration with Dyflin Distillers, the legendary punk-folk band The Pogues presents their very own, genuine Irish blended whiskey. The blend has an unusually high malt whiskey content of 50%, the rest being single grain aged for several years. The recipe comes from Barry Walsh and Frank McHardy; the whiskey is produced by West Cork Distillers in Skibbereen, an independent distillery in County Cork.
The Pogues were formed in London in 1982, at first under the name Pogue Mahone, the anglicisation of the Irish “póg mo thóin”. Singer Shane MacGowan founded the band after his punk band The Nips broke up, together with accordionist James Fearnley, banjo player Jem Finer and tin whistle player Spider Stacy. They played traditional Irish folk songs and their own songs with the energy of punk. With “Fairytale of New York”, a duet by Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl, they reached number two in the UK charts at Christmas 1987; the song remains a perennial Christmas favourite in Ireland and Britain.
The whiskey of the cult band is a soft, sweet blend in which the malt character takes centre stage.

- Nose: Soft and sweet – distinct malt and light fruity tones; plus strawberries, rosewater, rich tea biscuits, camomile tea, minerality, caramel and chocolate
- Palate: Pleasantly sweet with a strong malt note and intense tones of roasted nuts; plus buttery, mild berries, caramel, vanilla, mellow wood smoke and ginger
- Finish: Surprisingly soft and lightly spicy with nutty notes
