Profile: What Makes Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition Special
Jameson breaks new ground! The story of Caskmates began one Friday evening in August 2013 in the pub of the Franciscan Well Brewery in Cork. Dave Quinn, Master of Whiskey Science at Jameson, and Shane Long, the brewery’s head brewer, swapped casks: Jameson lent the brewery whiskey casks from the Midleton Distillery in which a stout matured; the stout-seasoned casks then returned to the distillery and were refilled with Jameson.
The result is an elegant Jameson with the triple-distilled softness of the original and additional notes of coffee, cocoa and fresh hops. Bit by bit Jameson built up a stock of Caskmates whiskey until around 80,000 cases were ready for worldwide sale in 2015. The influence of the stout is deliberately subtle: it remains a Jameson – not a mix of beer and whiskey.
Tasting Notes: What Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition Tastes Like
- Nose: Fresh hay, lightly fruity with distinct apple and peach, then becoming spicier; in the background roasted coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of hops
- Palate: Soft and fruity, fresh with notes of hops and cocoa; behind them marzipan and toasted oak, plus a creamy mouthfeel with coffee and chocolate tones
- Finish: Long, slightly sweet with chocolate, butterscotch and some vanilla

Für mich ist der Caskmates ein ganz besonderer Whiskey. Ich finde die Geschichte mit den Bierfässern so wunderbar!
Ich habe ihn zum ersten Mal an einem ganz besonderen Ort in einem ganz besonderen Moment getrunken, den ich für immer mit diesem Whiskey in Verbindung bringen werde.
Und der Whiskey selbst ist etwas Besonderes, den man hervorholt, wenn man besondere Menschen zu Gast hat die man mit etwas Außergewöhnlichem überraschen möchte.

Auch diesen Whiskey habe ich verschenkt. Der Beschenkte sagt, dass die Lagerung in Bierfässern eine gute Idee ist, jedoch schmeckt man den hohen Anteil von Grain-Whiskey heraus.
