Portrait: What makes the Wolfburn Northland special
If you look right up at the top of Scotland's whisky map - really right up there, where the wind has names and sheep outnumber people - then you end up in Thurso, the northernmost town on the British mainland. And that's exactly where it stands: the Wolfburn Distillery.
The name sounds like Nordic mythology, but is down-to-earth Scottish: Wolfburn is named after a small river ("Burn") that once supplied a distillery - which already existed in the 19th century, but eventually disappeared, like a wolf in the fog. In 2013, the idea was rekindled – this time more modern, more sustainable, and with a lot of heart and soul.
Northland was the first bottling from the newly founded distillery – a kind of liquid calling card with the charm of the rugged north. Aged in casks that previously contained Islay whisky (rumor has it they still faintly dreamed of sea air), it embodies everything that defines Wolfburn: craftsmanship, patience, and the conviction that even in force 9 winds, you can still fill a good cask.
Production takes place entirely on-site – from mashing to bottling. No computers, no rush. Just honest craftsmanship. And when you look at the bottle, you can already see it: the stylized wolf guarding the north. Or at least the stock.
In short: Wolfburn Northland is a whisky with character, history – and a clear goal: to show that the true North is liquid.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Wolfburn Northland tastes like
- Nose: The aroma begins sweet and fruity, accompanied by a fresh sea breeze. In the background, citrus aromas, especially lemon, as well as fresh grain and a hint of peat appear.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky begins sweetly, with nutty notes. This is followed by fruity notes of grapes, accompanied by honey, before coffee and dark chocolate come to the fore – complex and balanced.
- Finish: The finish is very well-rounded, with the aromas from the palate remaining present. A subtle peat note accompanies the finish and ensures a harmonious conclusion.
