Profile: What Makes Bushmills 21 Year Old Special
The 21-year-old is a limited bottling with individual numbering. It is a vatting of single malts that matured for at least 19 years in hand-selected oloroso sherry casks and bourbon casks and then spent around two more years in Madeira casks. The unusually long stay in Madeira casks gives it ripe fruit and raisin notes. In the sample it is easy to get to know.
Bushmills is on the north coast of Antrim in Northern Ireland, a few miles from the Giant’s Causeway. The single malt is triple distilled, which makes the spirit light, soft and fruity. The distillery now belongs to Proximo Spirits.
Tasting Notes: What Bushmills 21 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Lots of toffee and honey, plus fruity-spicy notes and some roasted coffee
- Palate: Pleasant mouthfeel, creamy with notes of nuts, dates and figs – followed by grapes and exotic fruit, above all mango and apricot
- Finish: Like sweet syrup, with some tobacco and mint
