Profile: What Makes Kilchoman Machir Bay Special
Machir Bay is the name of a beach near the distillery and the flagship of the Kilchoman range. Young whiskies from the distillery that matured in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-oloroso sherry butts are used for this bottling. In the sample it is easy to get to know.
Kilchoman was founded in 2005 by Anthony and Kathy Wills at Rockside Farm on Islay’s west coast – the first new distillery on the island in more than 124 years and the smallest on the island.
Tasting Notes: What Kilchoman Machir Bay Tastes Like
- Nose: Distinct lime and lemon, paired with a sweet-smoky aroma; plus brine, vanilla and a sugary sweetness
- Palate: Vanilla and butterscotch are very present – then sweet peat follows; plus liquorice, sea salt and a hint of milk chocolate
