Portrait: What makes the Aberfeldy 12 year old special
The Aberfeldy 12 year old is like a well-mannered Highlander in a tweed jacket: traditional, courteous and with a pedigree that is impressive. Its home is in the tranquil village of Aberfeldy in Perthshire, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands – where the hills roll gently and the water is so clear it practically whispers "Single Malt" as it flows by.
The distillery was founded in 1896 by John Dewar & Sons. Yes, the very same Dewars who made a name for themselves worldwide with their blends. Aberfeldy was the heart of these blends from the very beginning – the solid Highland foundation in the orchestra, so to speak.
For a long time, the distillery operated more in the background, like a talented bassist providing the rhythm while others take center stage. Only later did Aberfeldy move more prominently into the spotlight as a standalone single malt.
The distillery's location is no coincidence. The Pitilie Burn, a spring known for its purity – and allegedly containing traces of gold – flows nearby. No joke: Gold was actually panned in this region. Perhaps that explains the subtle luster that the name Aberfeldy still carries today.
You could say: Liquid gold is produced here – only much more reliably than panning in the riverbed. Today, Aberfeldy is part of the Bacardi portfolio, which doesn't detract from its Scottish understatement. Despite the international corporate structure, the distillery remains true to its origins.
No futuristic glass architecture, but classic warehouses, a wealth of tradition, and a clear focus on craftsmanship.
The 12-year-old is considered the brand's flagship. It's the entry point into the world of Aberfeldy - not a flashy show-off, but a confident representative of its craft. One that doesn't throw around superlatives, but prefers to impress with its history. A part of the Scottish whisky landscape for over a century - and as relaxed as the Highlands themselves.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Aberfeldy 12 year old tastes like
- Nose: Smooth and inviting with a blend of honey, vanilla, and ripe apple. Light citrus aromas meet malt and a hint of floral notes. Subtle spice nuances and a mild oak presence emerge in the background, adding structure to the bouquet.
- Palate: Round and balanced on the palate. Sweet honey and caramel notes combine with fruity accents of pear and apple. A light spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg adds depth, while the oak subtly provides stability. Everything is harmonious and well-integrated.
- Finish: Medium-long, warming, and smooth. The honey sweetness fades slowly, accompanied by fine spice and light malt. A hint of oak lingers on the palate, the aftertaste is pleasantly rounded and leaves a balanced, harmonious finish.

Für mich eine ausgewogener Whisky geschmacklich angenehm ohne erkennbaren torfigen Geschmack. Besonders für Einsteiger interessant.
Er wird in meiner Sammlung nicht fehlen.
