Portrait: What makes the Cask Islay special
When it comes to Islay, whisky enthusiasts often picture rugged coastlines, fresh Atlantic breezes, and an island where peat is practically a way of life. Cask Islay by A.D. Rattray brings that very spirit to your glass—authentic, full of character, and free from unnecessary frills.
This bottling comes from the long-established Scottish company A.D. Rattray, whose history dates back to 1868.Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray as a wine and spirits merchant, the brand has built an outstanding reputation as an independent bottler over the generations. Rather than producing whisky itself, A.D. Rattray seeks out exceptional casks and spirits with distinctive character that reflect their place of origin as authentically as possible.
Cask Islay is a tribute to the famous whisky island of Islay, located off Scotland's west coast. Here, nature itself seems to play a role in the production process: wind, sea, and weather shape not only the landscape but also the culture of the islanders. The people are known for being warm, down-to-earth, and proud of their craft - qualities often attributed to this whisky as well.
Ex-bourbon casks are used for maturation, giving the spirit ample time to develop its unique character. Furthermore, the whisky is non-chill filtered and bottled at its natural color. This means: no cosmetic enhancements, no artificial adjustments - just whisky, exactly as shaped by cask and time.
Cask Islay thus stands as a classic representative of its origins. It tells the story of an island where tradition is a living reality, of a brand that has prioritized quality for over 150 years, and of the conviction that fine whisky requires no elaborate gimmicks. Sometimes, all it takes is a good cask, a little patience, and an island that knows how whisky history is written.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Cask Islay tastes like
- Nose: Bold smoky notes open the bouquet, accompanied by grilled lemon. These are joined by maritime nuances reminiscent of freshly prepared scallops by the sea, as well as the warm atmosphere of glowing embers from a beach bonfire.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky reveals itself to be balanced and complex. Sweet notes of Scottish butter tablet meet roasted peanuts and a pleasantly sweet-and-salty peat smoke. The combination of gentle smoke, fresh lemon, and salted nuts creates a harmonious overall impression full of character.
- Finish: The finish is long-lasting and characterized by subtle notes of ash. Accompanying this is the spicy depth of pipe tobacco, lending the whisky a distinctive and memorable conclusion.

Nicht schlecht, muss man aber nicht haben. Für den Preis würde ich eher zum Laphroaig QC greifen.
