Profile: What Makes Tomatin 18 Year Old Special
Tomatin 18 Year Old is a “fully grown” Highlander: it matures in traditional oak casks and first-fill oloroso sherry butts. This brings dried fruit, nougat and nutty notes that join tropical fruit and a full, soft finish. The bottling was awarded at the World Whisky Awards in 2014.
The Tomatin distillery was founded in 1897 south of Inverness and worked with only two stills until 1958. In the 1970s, with 12.5 million litres a year, it was the largest distillery in Scotland. In 1986 it was rescued by Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co, making it the first Scottish distillery under Japanese control. Today it operates six wash stills and six spirit stills.
Tasting Notes: What Tomatin 18 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Lots of fruit as in an orchard, plus cinnamon, vanilla, maple syrup and some smoky heather; sultanas, winter spices, ripe grapes and cloves
- Palate: Delicately sweet with distinct citrus fruit and dark chocolate, a little oak; honeycomb, barley sugar, oranges and cocoa
- Finish: Long finish, sweet and dry; warming, chocolatey-fruity and slightly spicy

Ein sehr leckerer 18 jähriger,sehr fruchtig,süß und ohne Rauch,einer der besten 18 jährigen zu einem sehr guten Preis Leistungsverhältnis die ich kenne :-)

Nase: überraschend leicht alkoholisch, es dauert ein wenig bis sich der Alkohol legt und dann kommen Früchte und Gewürze: Kirschen, Rosinen, Sherry-Einfluss deutlich spürbar, Vanille, Ingwer,
Mund: prickelnder Antritt, süß auf der Zunge, etwas pfeffrig.
Abgang: Anfangs noch süß und fruchtig, schlägt dann aber um in deutliche Eiche. Zartbittere Kakao und Espressonoten.
Fazit: Ich habe mir ihn runder vorgestellt, gerade der Abgang ist mir zu holzig-bitter. 43 % für einen 18-jährigen scheint mir eigentlich optimal, trotzdem herrscht diese Alkoholnote im Aroma. Ich denke, dass hier doch ein paar zu viele Re-(re-)fill-Fässer verwendet wurden...
Trotzdem ein guter, voluminöser Whisky. Er ist komplex und kein All-Day-Dram. Nach 3-maligem Verkosten daher erstmal nur 3 Sterne. Vielleicht ein Kandidat, den man erst schätzen lernen muss.
