Profile: What Makes Aberlour 16 Year Old Double Cask Matured Special
Aberlour is one of the creamiest malts there is, with a distinct sherry note and a pronounced toffee character. The 16 year old Double Cask Matured matures in two different cask types – former bourbon and sherry casks – which combine into a soft, rich and spicy composition.
The present distillery was built in 1879 by James Fleming, a local banker and grain merchant, who used the water from St. Drostan’s Well, a spring named after an early Columban monk on the site. Fleming was a well-known philanthropist who gave the community a town hall, street lighting, a hospital and a bridge. In 1945 Aberlour became part of Campbell Distillers and in 1974 joined the Pernod Ricard group, to which the distillery still belongs today.
The Double Cask Matured is one of the best-known Aberlour bottlings: a Speysider in which the sweetness is well balanced by the oak.
