Profile: What Makes Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Special
The Samuels family has now been distilling their whisky (Scottish spelling!) for five generations. It began in 1844 with Taylor W. Samuels and his distillery in Deatsville. Today's Star Hill distillery was founded in 1889 in Loretto, Nelson County, Kentucky. Bill Samuels acquired it in 1953 and gave it a thorough renovation. From 1959 onward, Maker's Mark grew into Kentucky's market leader, and the bourbon with the red wax “maker's mark” seal became a fixture of New York's scene bars too.
