Portrait: What makes the Dalwhinnie 15 year old special
If you have a weakness for high altitudes, smooth flavors, and solid British restraint, then Dalwhinnie 15 year old is just the right dram. It comes from Scotland's highest distillery - yes, indeed! Dalwhinnie lies at around 326 meters above sea level, somewhere between rugged Highlands, fickle mountains, and very contented sheep.
The distillery was founded in the 19th century - presumably because someone thought, "Up here, far from everything, is the perfect place for whisky!" And they weren't entirely wrong. The water comes from the crystal-clear Loch an Doire Uaine, which sounds a bit like tapping into an elven spring.
The Dalwhinnie 15 year old is the distillery's flagship product and one of its best-selling Classic Malts. No wonder: It's charming, reserved, and friendly - the kind of whisky you could pour for your mother-in-law without worrying.
It's aged in former bourbon casks, its barley is only lightly peated, and the smoke lingers discreetly in the background - like a polite guest at a garden party.
In short: If you like mountain air but don't need a storm in your glass, Dalwhinnie is the perfect choice. A whisky that whispers more than it roars - but is quite charming for that.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Dalwhinnie 15 year old tastes like
- Nose: Soft and inviting with sweet honey aromas, vanilla, and a hint of heather - delicate fruitiness and a light hint of malt and smoke in the background
- Palate: Smooth, round, and balanced - sweet notes of honey and toffee combine with light grain, a hint of citrus, and subtle spice - the structure is creamy and elegant
- Finish: Medium-length and pleasantly warm - leaving behind notes of honey, light oak, and a hint of smoke - all very finely and harmoniously interwoven

sehr sanft
