Portrait: What makes the Cragganmore 12 year old special.
The Cragganmore 12 year old is something like the quiet gentleman among Scottish single malts - one that doesn't draw attention to itself loudly, but confidently claims its place on any whisky shelf. It comes from Speyside, a region where distilleries are more common than sheep - and that's saying something in Scotland.
Cragganmore was founded in 1869 by a certain John Smith - a name as inconspicuous as an invisibility cloak, but his whisky packs a punch. Smith, by the way, was quite a visionary: Instead of settling on rivers like many others, he strategically built his distillery directly next to a railway line. Why? Quite simple - faster whisky transport, less effort, more time to enjoy. Priorities, in other words.
Cragganmore is part of the Classic Malts of Scotland series - the whisky world's "Greatest Hits" collection, so to speak. And this 12-year-old is the charismatic track number 4: unobtrusive, yet unforgettable.
So: no smoke monster, no caped showman - but a whisky for connoisseurs with a penchant for understatement. And for all those who prefer to taste twice rather than shout too loudly once.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Cragganmore 12 year old tastes like
- Nose: Complex and aromatic with floral aromas, malt, and a hint of herbs - complemented by subtle hints of honey, nuts, and light smoke - a balanced nose with depth and elegance
- Palate: Soft and full-bodied with malty sweetness and a hint of fruit - a light smokiness resonates, accompanied by herbal tones, grain, and subtle oak - harmonious and complex
- Finish: Medium to long, with gentle smoky notes, a fine spice, and a dry, slightly nutty finish - elegant and pleasantly balanced
