In 1685, rum first flowed from the still at the Trois Rivières plantation in southern Martinique - the estate itself had already been founded in 1660 by pioneers Pierre Mathieu and Jean-Baptiste Moïse, on the border between the Caribbean and the Atlantic. From 1940 onward, the estate committed fully to the traditional rhum agricole method, using freshly pressed cane juice instead of molasses, and in 1996 Trois Rivières was awarded the "Rhum de la Martinique" AOC - to this day the world's only protected designation of origin for rum, comparable to the appellation protections for Champagne or Cognac. Although actual distillation has taken place at a new site since 2004, the estate's characteristic windmill and cane fields in Sainte-Luce continue to watch over the historic property.

What does the AOC designation mean for Trois Rivières?

The "Rhum de la Martinique" AOC, awarded in 1996, strictly regulates every production step - from the cane variety through distillation to cask maturation. Trois Rivières is thus part of the only rum in the world permitted to carry such a protected designation of origin.

Why is the windmill so important to the brand?

The historic windmill of Sainte-Luce is the estate's landmark and still adorns every bottle of Trois Rivières today - a visible nod to the site's more than 300-year history.
