When Cuban general Máximo Gómez fought in the war of independence against Spain in the late 19th century, a particular rum became his companion and gained nationwide fame as a result. It's exactly this historical legend that master rum-maker Juan Alberto Álvarez pays tribute to with his brand Summum, matured in the Dominican Republic using the traditional Spanish solera method. In 2014, Álvarez expanded the line with Summum Cañero - a rum deliberately based on pure cane juice rather than molasses, emphasising its Dominican origin while preserving the Spanish maturation tradition.
