Is Malteco still made in Guatemala?
No, not directly anymore. Malteco originally came from the Guatemalan Licorera Quetzalteca, but after Diageo's takeover in 2011, brand creator Marco Savio relocated production to Panama, to the same distillery that produces Malecon rum. Guatemalan maestros roneros still ensure the typical style, however.
What is the "house above the clouds"?
A warehouse at around 2,300 metres altitude, one of the highest in the world - the cool, thin mountain air influences maturation and gives Malteco its distinctive character.
Flavour profile
Taste: Full-bodied and sweet with caramel, tropical fruit and a woody, spiced depth from the cane-honey production method.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat as a digestif, to enjoy the complex aromas of high-altitude maturation.
