Appleton Estate
In 1655, shortly after the British invasion of Jamaica, the soldier Francis Dickinson received a piece of land in the Nassau Valley from the English crown, which he named after his hometown - the first documented rum from this estate dates to 1749. In 1825, wheelwright John Wray opened his "Shakespeare Tavern" in Kingston, renaming it "J. Wray & Nephew" together with his nephew Charles James Ward in 1860. It wasn't until 1916 that the two strands of history merged: Cecil Lindo and his brothers simultaneously acquired both Appleton Estate and J. Wray & Nephew, creating what remains Jamaica's largest spirits company to this day - now part of the Italian Campari group.

How old is Appleton Estate really?
The estate traces back to a 1655 land grant, with the first documented rum dating to 1749 - making Appleton Estate one of the oldest continuously producing rum distilleries in Jamaica.
How did the connection to J. Wray & Nephew come about?
J. Wray & Nephew emerged in 1860 from John Wray's Kingston tavern. It wasn't until 1916 that the Lindo family bought both companies simultaneously and merged them into a firm that still dominates the Jamaican rum market today.
Flavour profile
Taste: Full-bodied and complex with ripe tropical fruit, caramel and an elegant wood spice, with older bottlings adding oak and vanilla.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or on the rocks as a digestif; younger bottlings also work well in classic rum cocktails.
Start with Appleton Estate Signature.
