Profile: What makes the Nc’Nean Quiet Rebels - Matthew special

Rebels don’t always have to be loud. Some prefer to simply bring along a whisky, watch a good movie, and let others do the talking.

Welcome to Nc’Nean Quiet Rebels – a series that puts the spotlight not just on the whisky, but above all on the people behind it. In this sixth edition, Matthew—a whisky blender at Nc’Nean—takes center stage with a release that reflects his own personal style.

And for anyone with a soft spot for cinema and unusual contrasts, there is naturally the chance to play director when putting it all together.

The spirit is crafted at a distillery that embodies the "Quiet Rebel" ethos perfectly. Located on Scotland’s west coast, Nc’Nean takes a modern approach that marries whisky-making with sustainability. Rather than loudly proclaiming "innovation," they let their actions speak for themselves: they use 100% Scottish barley and operate according to a net-zero philosophy.

For Matthew’s edition, the approach to cask management was equally unconventional. The blend utilizes 47% Manzanilla, 51% Bourbon, and 2% Oloroso sherry casks. Particularly intriguing is the fact that the Manzanilla hogsheads were seasoned in Jerez for a full 24 months—a detail demonstrating that, at Nc’Nean, nothing is left to chance, even behind the scenes.

And then there is the presentation. The dark bottle is made from recycled glass and features delicate botanical motifs. After all, sustainability doesn’t have to look like it came straight from an eco-friendly specialty store.

The whisky is bottled at 48.5% ABV, without chill filtration, and as a limited edition.

So, Matthew has got his own personal bottling. Congratulations!

One thing is certain: Quiet Rebel is the name of the game here. Not loud. Not conformist. And definitely not an off-the-shelf whisky.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Nc’Nean Quiet Rebels - Matthew tastes like

  • Nose: An inviting interplay of warm pineapple cake and delicate vanilla unfolds on the nose. This is joined by a distinctive sweet-and-salty popcorn note, while roasted hazelnuts add depth.
  • Palate: On the palate, the exotic sweetness of ripe pineapple blends with buttery caramel and a subtle salty note. Delicate citrus accents provide fresh contrast, while intense roasted notes define the creamy texture.
  • Finish: The finish is long-lasting and characterized by dried hazelnuts. A subtle tannic note from the Sherry maturation provides structure and leads to an elegant, pleasantly dry finish.
