Portrait: What makes the Edradour 10 year old 1st-fill Sauternes Hogsheads special

Sometimes a distillery simply knows what it’s doing. And Edradour certainly does - after all, it is considered one of Scotland’s smallest traditional distilleries. Tucked away in Pitlochry and sheltered by the majestic Grampian Mountains, operations here take place far removed from large-scale industrial production. Instead, there is craftsmanship, dedication - and likely the occasional friendly chat between the still and the cask warehouse.

Its location in the so-called "rain shadow" grants the distillery pleasantly long summer days and a climate that is surprisingly drier and sunnier than in many parts of western Scotland. While rain elsewhere writes Scottish legends, the sun in Pitlochry often shines on copper pot stills - and on casks patiently maturing toward their destiny.

With the Edradour 10 year old 1st-fill Sauternes Hogsheads, the small distillery demonstrates once again that big names do not necessarily require massive production volumes. Distilled in February 2016 and bottled in April 2026, this single malt was allowed to rest for a full ten years in first-fill Sauternes hogsheads. These casks come from a renowned winery in Bordeaux, bringing a touch of French winemaking tradition to the Scottish Highlands - a charming international liaison, entirely free of language barriers.

At Edradour, incidentally, "small batch" truly means small. They don't think in terms of football-stadium dimensions here, but rather in cozy Highland proportions. Each bottling feels like a lovingly curated summer postcard from Scotland - only in liquid form.

And while others might make a lot of noise, Edradour remains relaxed. After all, they know that anything maturing under the shelter of the mountains needs no fanfare. A bit of sunshine, plenty of patience, and a healthy dose of tradition are all it takes to bottle a spirit after ten years that bears the unmistakable signature of one of the country’s most distinctive distilleries.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Edradour 10 year old 1st-fill Sauternes Hogsheads tastes like

  • Nose: An inviting, fruit-forward opening with aromas of honey and light floral nectar. Ripe apricots, juicy peaches, and a hint of candied citrus peel rise to the nose. Underlying these are subtle floral notes, vanilla cream, and a delicate impression of light-skinned grapes. With a little time, understated almond notes and an elegant, wine-like sweetness - reminiscent of fine dessert wines - unfold.
  • Palate: On the palate, the single malt is harmonious and rounded. A pleasant honey sweetness blends with notes of yellow stone fruit, ripe pear, and a hint of exotic fruits. The texture is smooth - almost creamy - while subtle spice notes, such as white pepper and a touch of nutmeg, provide structure. Subtle woody nuances and a light hint of vanilla and pastry round out the profile. The influence of the first-fill Sauternes hogsheads lends the whisky an elegant fruitiness with balanced sweetness.
  • Finish: Medium-long to long, with a soft fade and lingering honey sweetness. Fruity notes of apricot and light-colored grape remain present, accompanied by a fine, drying woody tone. A delicate floral aftertaste provides an elegant, summery finish.
