When Sam Heughan isn't busy riding across the Highlands as a hero in the hit series Outlander, he seems to prefer devoting his time to life's truly important questions: How do you capture a piece of Scotland in a bottle? In Germany, the answer to that question goes by the name THE ’NACH Fine Scottish Vodka.

In hindsight, it seems almost inevitable that Sam Heughan would eventually take over his own distillery. After all, he is a true "Galloway Lad" - born and raised in the wild southwest of Scotland.

A region brimming with nature, stories, and - presumably - enough rain to let creative ideas flourish. In 2025, Heughan fulfilled a personal dream by acquiring the former Crafty Distillery in Newtown Stewart, now known as the Galloway Distillery.

However, the connection had existed for some time: since as early as 2023, the team there had been producing Wild Scottish Gin - and, more recently, Fine Scottish Vodka - for Sam’s own spirits brand. A particularly charming detail is that the former owners, Craig Rankin and Graham Taylor, remained on board as managing directors. True to the motto: new chapter, same passion.

Internationally, the brand actually operates under the name “The Sassenach.” In Germany, however, trademark law threw a wrench in the works. Rather than hanging their heads, they swiftly gave birth to THE ’NACH - exclusively for the German market. It sounds a bit like a spontaneous order at the bar: “Another one?”  -  ​​“The ’Nach, please.”

The production process itself also demonstrates that no one here was looking to take the easy way out. For this vodka, three distinct base spirits are produced separately and subsequently artfully blended together. Wheat, wild apples, and blackberries provide the foundation—a labor-intensive process where others would likely have long since broken for tea. It is precisely this commitment to excellence that aligns perfectly with Sam’s vision of the "Gallo-Way": not merely being good, but forging one’s own path. As creatively as possible. As Scottish as possible. And, evidently, with some rather brilliant ideas in tow.
