Portrait: What makes The Epicurean - Peated Edition special
Sometimes all it takes is a small idea to reinvent an established character. That's exactly what happened with "The Epicurean - Peated Edition". The Lowland character, otherwise known for its charmingly urban style, decided to venture into a bit of adventure – without forgetting its good manners.
Behind the brand is Douglas Laing & Co., an independent family-owned company from Glasgow, known for distinctive bottlings since 1948. With "The Epicurean," Douglas Laing has created a tribute to the classic connoisseur - inspired by a historical figure from 1930s Glasgow, supposedly known for his wit, style, and love of good food and drink.
In short: someone who knew exactly what he was doing - and with a twinkle in his eye. This peated edition is a small but exquisite exception in the otherwise predominantly unpeated Lowland whisky world. And it does it in its own way: the smoke doesn't come directly from the malt, but rather creeps in through cask maturation.
It's a bit like someone entering the room wearing a smoky tweed jacket - subtle, but definitely noticeable. With only 1,800 bottles worldwide, of which just 300 are for Germany, this edition definitely falls into the "when it's gone, it's gone" category. Bottled at cask strength of 50.5% vol., without chill filtration and without added colorings, it remains pleasantly honest - entirely in keeping with the philosophy of Douglas Laing.
What makes this whisky special is less the obvious, but rather the idea behind it: a Lowland blend that dares to forge a new path without losing its roots.
Or, to put it another way: a gentleman who suddenly decides to discover campfire romance – but, of course, in a tailored suit.
A limited edition with character, history, and just the right amount of British charm.
