Portrait: What makes Loch Lomond - The Open Special Edition 2026 special
Sometimes the world of whisky meets the world of golf - and the result is something like Loch Lomond - The Open Special Edition 2026. A name so long you'd almost have to write it on the scorecard. This limited edition bottling celebrates The Open Championship, more precisely the 154th edition at the venerable Royal Birkdale Golf Club. In short: Here, they don't just put the pot in, they pour it too.
The whisky is produced by the Loch Lomond Distillery, idyllically situated near the famous Loch Lomond. The distillery is known for going its own way – primarily thanks to its rather unusual straight neck pot stills. While other distilleries rely on tried and tested methods, Loch Lomond seems a bit like the tinkerer in the whisky lab who says: "Let's just try something different." Michael Henry is responsible for this edition, holding the reins – or rather, the casks – in his hands.
After classic maturation in American oak, the single malt undergoes a six-month finish in Argentinian Malbec casks. An international exchange where presumably no one speaks Spanish, but everyone gets along perfectly. Visually, the 2026 edition is particularly travel-oriented: The packaging, in a premium travel poster design, looks like it could be hung directly on the wall – or at least used to give the impression of having more stylish souvenirs than fridge magnets.
At 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, and bottled as a limited edition, this whisky is for anyone who likes to have something special on their shelf. Whether you love golf or not is irrelevant – the important thing is having a glass handy.
Because in the end, this Loch Lomond is like a good tee shot: well-thought-out, precise, and with the clear aim of making an impression – even without a dress code.
