Portrait: What makes the Kilkerran 8 year old Bourbon Cask Matured special
Anyone who thinks everything has already been said in the world of Scottish whisky has probably never been to Campbeltown. This small, almost sleepy-looking whisky region was once something like the Silicon Valley of Scotch - only with more smoke and considerably fewer start-ups.
Today, among others, the Glengyle Distillery is ensuring that its good reputation is once again polished to a high shine. Glengyle is something of a comeback artist among distilleries. Originally founded in the 19th century, it disappeared from the scene for a long time – practically a whisky version of "I'm off then."
It wasn't until the early 2000s that it was revived, much to the delight of everyone who likes to know where their dram comes from. The single malt is produced there under the name Kilkerran 8 Year Old Bourbon Cask Matured – a name that, incidentally, derives from the old Gaelic name for Campbeltown. Tradition? Check.
The 8-year-old bottling presented here is a strictly limited edition and was matured 100% in bourbon casks. All or nothing – half measures are clearly not an option here. Bottled at a robust cask strength of 57.7% ABV. This whisky is aimed more at people who, when it comes to dilution, say: "Water? Maybe later."
What makes Kilkerran special is its down-to-earth approach. No exaggerated marketing gimmicks, no unnecessary frills – instead, honest craftsmanship from a region that has seen its best days and is now casually proving that it's far from finished. And then there's this charming idiosyncrasy: While other distilleries try to please everyone, Glengyle seems to simply do its own thing.
With success, because limited bottlings like this one often sell out faster than you can pronounce "Campbeltown" correctly.
In short: The Kilkerran 8 year old is no flashy whisky, but a characterful spirit with a history – and that's precisely what makes it so interesting.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Kilkerran 8 year old Bourbon Cask Matured tastes like
Nose: On the nose, sweet, inviting aromas of butterscotch and creamy biscuits initially dominate. These are joined by apple butter and a delicate hint of white miso, which provides an interesting, slightly savory depth. As it develops, hints of airy sponge cake and the gentle sweetness of poached pears emerge.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky is pleasantly creamy with notes of fresh shortbread and smooth caramel chocolate. Fruity nuances of gooseberries and white grapes bring freshness to the experience. This is complemented by subtle hints of cigar box and sandalwood, which lend the flavor profile an elegant, slightly spicy complexity.
- Finish: The finish is multifaceted and balanced. Nuances of green pepper and honeydew melon emerge and combine with a fine, ashy note. This combination creates a long-lasting, slightly dry, and pleasantly fresh finale.
