Portrait: What makes the Löwenthal Winery Spätburgunder 2023 special

The 2023 Spätburgunder from the Löwenthal Winery is, in a way, the red counterpart to the relaxed Palatinate lifestyle: charming, down-to-earth, and with just the right amount of seriousness – but never more. Origin? The Palatinate, of course.
A region where not only does the sun regularly shine, but the vines also know how to enjoy life. The Löwenthal Winery represents a modern interpretation of classic winemaking tradition. Here, the focus isn't on dusty rituals, but on craftsmanship with a touch of humor.
The "brave" line, from which this Spätburgunder also originates, almost sounds like understatement – as if the wine were quietly saying, "I'm completely uncomplicated." Which is usually a good sign. The 2023 vintage has everything you could want in an approachable red wine: With 12.5% alcohol by volume, it remains pleasantly relaxed, while 5.2 g/l acidity and 5.9 g/l residual sugar ensure a balanced interplay. Produced in a dry style, it manages to show structure without seeming stiff – more like someone who knows how to behave but still enjoys a good laugh. Spätburgunder, also known internationally as Pinot Noir, is often considered the diva among grape varieties.
Demanding in the vineyard, sensitive in the winemaking process, and easily offended if not handled with care. All the more remarkable, then, is the creation of a wine that combines this elegance with a pleasant approachability. And it seems Löwenthal has struck just the right note.
What makes this wine particularly appealing is its attitude: no grand drama, no exaggerated pathos, but a clear focus on the essentials. A quality wine that doesn't try to be someone else, but simply shows what the Palatinate region and the winery are capable of.

In short: The Löwenthal Spätburgunder 2023 is not a wine that loudly demands attention – it simply receives it.

About the Löwenthal Winery

The Löwenthal Winery was founded in the summer of 2022 in Eschbach on the Southern Wine Route. The winery takes its name from the Löwenthal, a picturesque valley that winds from the Madenburg castle ruins through the Haardt Mountains and surrounds the vineyards.
On over 20 hectares of vines, the team led by estate manager Frank Keilbach cultivates Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. The soils, composed of clay, loess, and variegated sandstone, offer ideal conditions for these grape varieties.
With a clear focus on quality, traditional methods are combined with modern technologies to produce Burgundian-style wines.
The wines are divided into a three-tiered quality pyramid, symbolized by paw prints on the bottles.
