The Ardnahoe Distillery itself is still one of the younger distilleries on Islay.
It only officially began operations in 2019, making it something of the baby of the famous whisky island's distilleries. It is run by Hunter Laing & Co., a family deeply rooted in the Scottish whisky business for generations. Experience meets a breath of fresh air here – or rather, fresh Atlantic air, as the distillery is picturesquely situated on Islay's northeast coast, overlooking the sea and blessed with plenty of weather.
The cask for this single malt bears the unassuming designation "Cask No. 84," but turns out to be a truly unique piece. An Oloroso quarter cask with a capacity of just around 50 liters – small, rare, and in the everyday world of whisky production, more the exception than the rule. Such casks demand attention and impart character, which is why they are usually reserved for special bottlings. Ardnahoe's decision to fully mature this whisky in just such a cask demonstrates confidence and a willingness to experiment.
