Portrait: What makes the Sild Lost Cave #02 special

Some whiskies mature in warehouses, others in old barns - and then there's the SILD Lost Cave #02, which thought: “Why not live in a cave?” And not just any cave, but a rediscovered cave system right by Lake Schliersee, one of Bavaria's postcard stars, framed by the Limestone Alps and situated at a breezy 777 meters altitude.
A place where normally only bats and ambitious amateur geologists come and go. Right there, on the western shore of Lake Schliersee, the Freudenberg peninsula juts out into the water – and deep within it lies the natural maturation laboratory of this special single malt. The cave itself was long forgotten until it was rediscovered, and the decision was quickly made: "Whiskies will mature here from now on." With a constant 94% humidity and a cool, stable temperature of 8°C, wooden casks apparently thrive.
Other luxury goods would be offended under these conditions, but casks flourish. SILD, the young Bavarian brand with a Nordic name, has long been known for taking unconventional paths – be it on the high seas or now deep within the rock.
With the Lost Cave Edition, they demonstrate once again that exceptional maturation locations aren't just for cheese and ham, but also for true pioneers of the whisky world. The Lost Cave #02 is strictly limited and thus, in a way, the Indiana Jones of German whiskies: a little mysterious, a little daring – only without the danger of falling boulders.
Anyone who puts it on their shelf can honestly claim: "My whisky lived in a cave."

Tasting Notes: This is how the Sild Lost Cave #02 tastes like

  • Nose: A harmonious composition of dried fruits, peach, raisins, and candied figs opens the aroma. Spicy wood aromas intertwine with delicate hints of honey, caramel, and vanilla. A subtle touch of smoke elegantly rounds off the multi-layered bouquet.
  • Palate: On the palate, intense fruit notes emerge first—sweet apricot and ripe fig set the tone. Then, fine, slightly smoky bacon notes unfold, accompanied by complex cask notes. The mouthfeel is soft, full-bodied, and harmoniously structured.
  • Finish: The finish is long-lasting with a pleasant fruity sweetness. A subtle, lingering smokiness provides a harmonious, elegant finish.
