Portrait: What makes the ElsBurn Heartgow 2025 Autumn special
In the legendary Harz Mountains, where witches and miners were once thought to dwell, today exquisite spirits are produced that could silence even the bagpipes. At the Hercynian Distilling Co., they don't brew a magic potion, but rather the finest German single malt whisky – and with such passion that even the Scottish Highlands would nod politely.
The latest creation from ElsBurn bears the poetic name Heartgow 2025 - Autumn. Responsible for this is Anna Buchholz, Head of Distilling, and clearly someone who knows how to capture liquid autumn in a bottle. This limited exclusive bottling was created – like all Heartgow editions – in one of those rare magical moments when, between batches, the whisky world briefly holds its breath and something entirely new is born.
Only 300 bottles of this Hercynian single malt exist – a bit like Pokémon, but for adults with good taste in glassware. It was matured in first-fill Palo Cortado and first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads, a fact worth mentioning a few times to make an impression.
Of course, this dram is neither colored nor chill-filtered, because in the Harz Mountains, they like to do things honestly. At 48% ABV, the Heartgow 2025 packs enough punch to bathe even foggy November days in golden light – or at least it feels that way. And while it's true that there's no accounting for taste, those who truly want to understand autumn might not need a walk in the woods. Just a glass of ElsBurn.
Conclusion: A carefully crafted single malt with a clear balance between smoke, sweetness, and fruit – typical ElsBurn, meticulously crafted and pleasantly approachable.
Tasting Notes: This is how the ElsBurn Heartgow 2025 Autumn tastes like
- Nose: A light smoke rises to the nose, accompanied by a delicate bacon note. Behind this, sweet impressions of roasted almonds and caramel emerge. Subtle fruit aromas of apricots and raisins round out the picture – a balanced interplay of smoke, sweetness, and fruit.
- Palate: On the palate, initially mild and balanced. The smoke remains subtly in the background, while caramel and roasted almonds dominate. These are complemented by fruity hints of dried apricots and raisins. The texture is full but not heavy, with a clear structure and pleasant sweetness.
- Finish: Medium to long, with lingering sweetness and a slightly smoky aftertaste. Caramel and nutty notes remain present, along with a touch of dark chocolate. A clean, rounded finish without any harshness.
