Portrait: What makes the Edradour 22 year old Matured in the Finest Amarone Casks - 200th Anniversary special

Two centuries of Edradour – and the small Highland distillery proves once again that greatness truly has nothing to do with volume. For its 200th anniversary, "Scotland's Little Gem" is serving up a bottling so charming it's as if Scotland's mist had been married to Italian red wine: the Edradour 22 Years Matured in the Finest Amarone Casks.
Five precious casks, previously filled with top-quality wine from the legendary Romano Dal Forno winery, served as the home for this whisky. That alone sounds like a love story between the Highlands and the Veneto – and the result tastes exactly like it. Here, robust Scottish craftsmanship meets Italian refinement, as if a kilt-wearing man and a winemaker had agreed to a collaboration over a glass of Amarone – with very pleasing results.

On the nose, the 22-year-old is both opulent and elegant: red berries, dark cherries, fine oak, and a hint of leather – like a cloud of fragrance wafting from an old library overlooking Tuscany. On the palate, an impressive depth unfolds: full-bodied, velvety, and complex, with notes of chocolate, dried fruit, and a vinous undertone reminiscent of fine dessert wines. A whisky that knows no hurry – it unfolds slowly, caresses the palate, and lingers as if it knows it won't be easily forgotten. The finish? Long, warm, and slightly dry, with subtle spice and elegant fruit notes.

One might almost say: a whisky with impact – without being loud. Only 1,510 bottles of this exquisite anniversary dram exist – and each one bears the signature of two masters of their craft. A dram that proves: when Scotland and Italy join forces, the result is not drama, but a magnificent whisky.
