Portrait: What makes The Gauldrons Eclipse special

In Campbeltown, where the wind tastes salty and the casks creak mysteriously, Douglas Laing has struck again - this time with a whisky as rare as a real solar eclipse. The Gauldrons Eclipse is the name of the limited edition, and it brings light – or rather, shadow – to the world of regional malts. For the first time, the Campbeltown blended malt was finished in orange wine casks from the cellars of Jerez de la Frontera. A touch of Spanish sun meets Scottish mist – tradition and experimentation in perfect balance.
The result is a whisky that smells of orange peel, dried apricots, and roasted almonds, before revealing walnut, honey, ginger, and stone fruit on the palate. The finish? Long, spicy, and with a slightly fruity-tart orange twist. At 52.9% cask strength, Eclipse is robust but not boisterous – completely without added coloring, completely without chill filtration, completely honest. A bottle that proves Campbeltown can do not only maritime and malty, but also Mediterranean. Only 3,000 bottles were filled – each a moment in the shadows, embellished with gold embossing and a QR code on the neck that leads directly to the tasting.
The Gauldrons Eclipse is not an everyday whisky – rather a dramatic spectacle in a glass: short, rare, captivating. Anyone who manages to get a sip should enjoy it before the light returns.

Conclusion: A Campbeltown malt with an exciting combination of maritime structure and southern fruit. Eclipse shows how well whisky and orange wine casks can harmonize – balanced, complex, and pleasantly surprising.

Tasting Notes: This is how The Gauldrons Eclipse tastes like

  • Nose: Soft and balanced with aromas of malt, dried apricots, and orange peel. Roasted almonds and a subtle hint of oak emerge in the background – fruity, nutty, and slightly sweet all at once.
  • Palate: Robust yet harmonious: Walnut and honey form the base, accompanied by a delicate ginger note that lends the dram a pleasant spiciness. Ripe stone fruits contribute a rounded, slightly fruity depth.
  • Finish: Medium to long, with lingering spice, a hint of citrus zest, and a distinctive, fruity-tart orange note. An elegant aftertaste with an almost otherworldly character – unusual, yet harmonious.
