Portrait: What makes the Wolfburn Northland 8 year old special
Some whiskies arrive on the market with a bang. Others creep slowly into the glass. And then there's the Wolfburn Northland – it was just there. In 2016, a young 3-year-old suddenly appeared on the doorstep, friendly, fresh, a little wild – and clearly from the North.
Now, a few years later, it's come of age: Northland is 8 – and now officially bears its new age on the label. No wonder, after all, in the whisky world, this is a bit like registering a doctorate. What has always distinguished it has remained: the maturation in quarter casks of American oak, the artisanal production in Thurso, the northernmost distillery on the British mainland – and, of course, that certain raw charm you only get when you distill in a region where even the wind loves whisky. It's no coincidence that the recipe has remained unchanged – it works. Only now, with the eight years, a healthy dose of depth and self-confidence has been added. Northland is no longer a fledgling, but a serious representative of the Wolfburn style. No smoke and mirrors, just barrel and character. In short: The wolf has grown older. But don't worry – it hasn't been tamed.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Wolfburn Northland 8 year old tastes like
- Nose: Initially sweet with fruity aromas and fresh sea air. In the background, citrus freshness, grain notes, and a subtle hint of peat smoke emerge.
- Palate: On the palate, sweet, nutty notes come to the fore, accompanied by hints of grapes and honey. Floral nuances complement the taste experience, enhanced by a touch of dried fruit and spices.
- Finish: The finish is soft and sweet, with the notes gradually fading away. A subtle, gentle peat smoke note remains at the end.
