Portrait: What makes the Boann Madeira Cask special
The Boann Madeira Cask is an Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey that shows that tradition doesn't have to be boring. It is distilled by the Boann Distillery – a relatively young, yet all the more ambitious distillery in Drogheda, on Ireland's east coast. Here, distilling is not only done with passion, but also with a healthy dose of innovation - true to the motto: old craft, new twist.
Single Pot Still isn't just a fancy term, but a true Irish specialty. Malted and unmalted barley come together in a single still - which doesn't exactly make the process any easier, but certainly more exciting.
After traditional maturation in oak barrels, the whiskey is finished in Madeira Casks. This is not only rare, but also clever - because here, Irish temperament meets Portuguese dessert wine. Sounds like a trip? It is. Only for the Cask.
The Boann brand, by the way, is named after an ancient river goddess - and as befits an Irish legend, more than just water flows here: character, curiosity, and a little bit of magic. Or simply: a whiskey that not only tells stories - but is one itself.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Boann Madeira Cask tastes like
- Nose: Complex and harmonious with ripe fruit, honey, and a hint of spiced oak. Dried fruits such as apricots and raisins are clearly evident, accompanied by a fine spicy sweetness and a hint of roasted nuts
- Palate: Complex and round with a balanced interplay of dried fruits, honey-sweet richness, and elegant nuttiness. The Madeira cask aging brings a gentle, natural sweetness and gives the whiskey additional depth and structure. Spicy wood notes and a subtle fruitiness ensure a refined, long mouthfeel
- Finish: medium to long with soft oak notes, subtle sweetness and a hint of dried fruit and nuts - the finish is balanced and persistent, with a fine spiciness that slowly recedes
