Portrait: What makes the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 12 special
The Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 12, with a robust 58.4% ABV, is the 2025 bottling from the venerable Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, a region once known as the whisky capital of Scotland. The distillery was originally founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and produced typical Campbeltown malt for over 50 years before closing in 1925.
It remained quiet for more than seven decades - until the turn of the millennium: With the support of Winifred Ewing and Hedley G. Wright, both descendants of the founding Mitchell family, Glengyle was ceremoniously reopened on March 25, 2004 after four years of renovation. Since then, the whiskies from the revived distillery have borne the name Kilkerran, derived from “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain”, an early Christian settlement on the site of present-day Campbeltown.
Batch No. 12 is part of the heavily smoky “Heavily Peated” series, which is valued for its uncompromising strength and honest character. Like all Kilkerran bottlings, this whisky is non-chill-filtered and non-colored - a true piece of Campbeltown, marked by history, passion, and careful craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 12 tastes like
- Nose: A creamy start with butterscotch and caramel notes, gradually developing into rye bread and a hint of tea leaves - complex and inviting.
- Palate: On the palate, the oiliness typical of Hazelburn is evident, accompanied by a subtle smokiness - notes of Ibérico ham and brandy snaps add depth and spice to the profile.
- Finish: The finish is smooth, with fine notes of lemon zest, honeycomb, and a hint of mint - the smoke remains subtle and accompanies the finish until the very end.
Campbeltown: The Victorian Whisky Capital of the World
Campbeltown, once known as the whisky capital with over 30 distilleries in the 19th century, looks back on a turbulent past as a former center of whisky production and still enjoys a worldwide reputation. Today, the three active distilleries in Campbeltown, Springbank, Glengyle, and Glen Scotia, preserve the heritage of the former Victorian whisky capital of the world and produce unique single malts using traditional production methods.
