Portrait: What makes The Legendary Silkie Brouwersnös special.
The Legendary Silkie Brouwersnös Edition is a limited special bottling from the Sliabh Liag Distillery in Donegal, in the far northwest of Ireland. At 50% ABV and after extensive maturation in two Belgian beer casks, this whiskey sets new standards in the Silkie range. The 9-month finish took place in two casks that had previously been filled with a Belgian "Dubbel" or "Double" - a mahogany-brown strong beer with around 8% alcohol, known for its full malt body and fruity aromas of pear, banana, raisin, and plum. These barrels come from the Dutch Brouwersnøs craft brewery in Groenlo, which is valued for its artisanal brewing and distinctive beers.
The combination of Irish whiskey and Belgian barrel aging makes this bottling particularly exciting. As with all bottlings from the Sliabh Liag Distillery, this one was fully transparent and authentically blended - a hallmark of the house. Sliabh Liag aims to revive Donegal's whiskey traditions. The distillery is known for its conscious use of regional influences, natural production, and a light smokiness reminiscent of old Irish styles.
With the Brouwersnös Edition, Sliabh Liag launches an innovative whiskey that combines artisanal brewing and traditional whiskey blending in a fascinating way. A product for connoisseurs that celebrates the creative collaboration of two independent craft breweries.
Tasting Notes: This is how The Legendary Silkie Brouwersnös tastes like
- Nose: The first impression is a warm mix of fruity depth and malty sweetness - ripe pear, banana, raisin, and plum - typical aromas of the Belgian Dubbel beer style - clearly rise to the nose. Behind this, a pleasant honey aroma emerges, accompanied by subtle smoke and a hint of dark chocolate. The beer barrel aging also brings an earthy, almost bready note, which gives the whiskey an interesting complexity.
- Palate: On the palate, the whiskey is full-bodied and powerful - an elegant balance of sweet dried fruits, spices, and a malty base structure characterizes the picture. Apple and ginger provide freshness and a slight spiciness. While the beer barrel maturation brings notes of caramel, dried fig, and toffee, a subtle bitterness of dark chocolate and roasted malt rounds out the flavor profile. The smoke remains in the background but enhances the depth.
- Finish: The finish is long, warming, and complex. The earthy notes from the beer barrel now emerge more clearly, accompanied by lingering spice and dried fruit notes. The smoke permeates the finish, soft and dry, leaving a slightly bitter malt note. Harmonious and multi-layered, an impressive conclusion
