Profile: What Makes Glenfiddich 15 Year Old with 2 Glasses Special
Glenfiddich was founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown in the glen of the River Fiddich; on Christmas Day 1887 the first single malt ran from the stills. To this day William Grant & Sons is a family company run by descendants of the founder; in 1892 the neighbouring Balvenie distillery was added.
For the 15 year old, Glenfiddich relies on the solera process, which comes from sherry production. The whisky is first matured in three different cask types – former sherry and bourbon casks and new oak – before all are married together in a large solera vat. Only half of the vat is bottled each time, while the other half remains in the vat and is refilled with a new batch. The vat is therefore never emptied completely – since 1998 this principle has ensured consistent quality and a particularly round character.
This limited edition comes with two Glenfiddich tasting glasses, so that the enjoyment for two can begin straight away.
Tasting Notes: What Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Spicy aromas with honey and ripe fruit and some cloves; behind them sweet sultanas, stewed apple crumble with cream and caramel, at first distinctly sherried
- Palate: Full body, very fruity, with vanilla notes and the spices again, very soft; the bourbon casks bring vanilla and baking spice, the new oak some grip, plus honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and brandy-soaked fruit cake
- Finish: Long finish in which the vanilla and some oak return, plus malt, honey and cinnamon
