Portrait: What makes the Impossible Red 2023 Laborie special
Some things just sound too good to be true. A seahorse on a surfboard. A penguin in midsummer. Or: a red wine from South Africa called "Impossible Red" - and yet still possible. Laborie from beautiful Paarl, one of South Africa's most renowned wine regions, proves with the 2023 vintage that sometimes the impossible simply requires a good cellar master.
Produced by KWV Pty. Ltd., a true heavyweight in the South African wine scene, this red wine doesn't come quietly. The label alone says: "Prepare for something." And the name? A bit exaggerated, of course - but pleasantly exaggerated. Like a friend who claims he can eat an entire ostrich steak by himself. (And then he does.)
The Impossible Red is a cuvée, a team player - not a diva with a single grape. And although it's intense, it doesn't want to overwhelm. On the contrary: It's more of a relaxed wine, perfect for game dishes with cranberries, grilled meat, or even sweetly marinated ostrich – which, admittedly, isn't the most everyday menu suggestion, but hey: "Impossible Red" isn't without culinary boldness.
With 14% alcohol by volume, the wine has a firm foothold – and will confidently accompany you through the evening without becoming overwhelming.
Conclusion: Impossible? In name only. This wine is the best of realism with a dash of South African fantasy.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Impossible Red 2023 Laborie tastes like
- Nose: On the nose, the Impossible Red is intense and complex. Dominant aromas of mocha, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee immediately evoke a cozy Cape Town café. Added to this are subtle sweet spices like cinnamon and clove, complemented by a hint of cigar box and vanilla - a warm, inviting combination of aromas with depth.
- Palate: On the palate, the wine is soft, juicy, and full-bodied. The fruit aromas—especially dark berries - are harmoniously integrated and supported by velvety, well-structured tannins. The wine is both powerful and smooth, with a pleasant spiciness that adds excitement. Chocolate and roasted notes underscore the warm overall impression without dominating.
- Finish: The finish is long and round, with a gentle lingering aroma of coffee, spices, and a hint of smoky wood. The structure remains present until the end without being heavy – a balanced and elegant finish that lingers for some time.
