Portrait: What makes the Tormore 27 year old 1994/2022 Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Ch. special

Once upon a time, there was a small deli in Elgin - with a passion for good whisky and presumably also for good stories. Over the decades, this shop became a name that whisky lovers around the world whisper reverently (and sometimes even pronounce aloud when enough tasting glasses are involved): Gordon & MacPhail.

For over 125 years and now four generations, the Urquhart family has been juggling not plates, but casks - specifically, their own oak casks, into which they have filled distillates from over 100 Scottish distilleries. The result? A collection so exclusive that even seasoned collectors nervously sip their dram. One of the distillery's most legendary series is the Connoisseurs Choice, launched in 1968 by whisky visionary George Urquhart – back then probably still sporting a tie, clipboard, and plenty of idealism.
Today, the range comprises more than 2,000 bottlings – and one of them is this exceptional Tormore 27 Year Old 1994/2022. Distilled in 1994, a time when mobile phones still had antennas, and bottled in 2022, this single malt embodies the patience of a quarter of a century. Matured in a first-fill sherry butt (#8348), limited to 570 bottles, and of course at cask strength – for those who prefer their whisky neat rather than on the rocks (because, after all, you don't throw ice into history).

A piece of whisky craftsmanship that proves: some things simply get better with age.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Tormore 27 year old 1994/2022 Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Ch. tastes like

  • Nose: A warm, inviting aroma unfolds with notes of creamy vanilla and ripe apples. Subtle sherry hints, reminiscent of fresh apple pie, spiced with a touch of black pepper, follow. A delicate hint of milk chocolate harmoniously rounds off the bouquet.
  • Palate: Robust yet balanced, the cask strength adds depth and structure without sacrificing elegance. Vanilla and sweet pastry notes mingle with subtle spice, while hints of chocolate and caramelized fruit emerge over time. A composition that combines mature serenity with vibrant complexity.
  • Finish: Long, warming, and gently spicy. The sweetness of the sherry finish lingers, accompanied by delicate chocolate notes and a final hint of pepper – like a friendly farewell after a long conversation by the fireplace.
