Profile: What Makes Cristal Special
Cristal was created in 1876 to satisfy the tastes of Tsar Alexander II, who asked Louis Roederer to reserve the house’s best cuvée for him every year. The Tsar demanded that his personal cuvée be served in transparent, flat-bottomed crystal bottles; the name Cristal goes back to this material. In the gift packaging it is prepared as a present.
The blend comes from up to 45 organically farmed plots of the Rouzaud family in villages such as Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Aÿ, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. Cristal is made only in the best years, when Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have reached perfect ripeness, and matures about six years in the cellars.
