Portrait: What makes Marzadro Grappa Diciotto Lune special
The Grappa Diciotto Lune from the House of Marzadro is like the elegant long-term vacationer among spirits: It takes its time, returns relaxed - and then has a story to tell. It is allowed to mature for a full 18 months, which not only gives it a sonorous name (“Diciotto Lune” – meaning 18 moons), but also that certain something of maturity and serenity.
This special grappa is produced in Trentino, a region so picturesque that even the grapes probably pause briefly before being harvested. The Marzadro distillery has long since made a name for itself here, standing for artisanal precision paired with a good dose of Italian passion.
What once began as a small family business is now a major player in the world of grappa – and has remained pleasantly down-to-earth. For Diciotto Lune, only pomace from selected grape varieties is used: Marzemino, Teroldego, Merlot, Moscato, and Chardonnay. A rather diverse group that gathers here in the still – almost like an international class reunion, only considerably more stylish.
The distillation process takes place in a gentle steam bath, a method that ensures exceptional smoothness and demonstrates Marzadro's commitment to precision over haste. After distillation, the real "holiday" begins: 18 months of maturation in cherry, ash, oak, and robinia Casks. Four different types of wood – it's easy to get confused, but it's precisely this diversity that makes it so appealing. One could say that this grappa gathers a little character at every stage before it is finally bottled.
The result is a grappa with personality, skillfully combining tradition and modernity. One that doesn't make a lot of noise, but rather convinces with quiet confidence – just like an Italian who knows that good style doesn't need to be rushed.
